The cell can change the oxidation state of proteins in order to turn them on and off. Demple outlines the molecular mechanism by which this occurs in several transcription factors (one of which, OxyR, is described on p. 1718 of this issue). Demple predicts that the examples of this process described in current literature are the first of many, and that redox regulation is a widely used regulatory feature of the cell.
