Summary

The Kyoto treaty's spotlight on the carbon cycle is already helping to drive a major overhaul of the multibillion-dollar U.S. Global Change Research Program (Science, 12 June, p. 1682). This week's lead Focus stories explore the major scientific uncertainty underlying the Kyoto treaty--how much carbon is stored and released by the world's forests (see p. 504)--and how a global monitoring system will track carbon dioxide flux between land and air (see p. 506).
