Summary

A common mutation in the gene encoding a protein called a-macroglobulin appears to increase the risk of the most common form of Alzheimer's disease, which occurs late in life. The number of Alzheimer's cases linked to the mutation could potentially be large, given that an estimated 30% of the population carries the mutation. The new gene and its protein, which may help scour toxins from between neurons, could also make sense of how several other proteins already implicated in Alzheimer's might contribute to the disease.
