Summary

The Ecological Detective Confronting Models with Data. Ray Hilborn and Marc Mangel. Princeton University Press, Princeton, NJ, 1997. 334 pp., $39.50, £30. ISBN 0-691-03496-6. Paper, $19.95, £16.95. ISBN 0-691-03497-4.

How do we find congruence among field, laboratory, and model? Hilborn and Mangel present an approach to investigating the complex (ecology, in this case) by trying different hypotheses until a coherent picture emerges. The authors make extensive use of computer programming for the generation of hypotheses, exploration of data, and comparison of different models.
