In this issue of Science (pp. 2013 and 2016), two separate teams of researchers report using quantum dots, multitalented flecks of semiconductor, as fluorescent tags to trace specific proteins within cells. Quantum dots can match dyes color for color, they are nontoxic, and they may be easier to use in tandem than conventional dyes.
