Darwinism Comes to America. Ronald L. Numbers. Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1998. 222 pp. $39.95. ISBN 0-674-19311-3. Paper, $18.95. ISBN 0-674-19312-1.

This study of the reaction to Darwinism in the United States dispels many myths about the origin, development, and distribution of creationism. The reviewer notes Number's sophisticated analysis of the 19th-century debates and suggests that paying less attention to the 20th-century clashes between modern Darwinists and Fundamentalists might provide interesting perspectives on moderates who sought to reconcile modern science and traditional faith.
