Summary

The investigation of magnetic structures such as multilayers, which are of technological importance especially in magnetic recording media, is greatly facilitated by the use of soft x-rays that are element specific and probe the characteristic length scales of these structures. Hillebrecht (page 2099) discusses the principles of x-ray magneto-optics and describes recent advances, for example, by Dürr et al. (page 2166), in the successful application of these tools to magnetic layers and multilayers.
