Summary

Research on a scientifically promising type of human cell received a vote of confidence last week. The National Bioethics Advisory Commission recommended on 14 July that the federal government fund not only research on human embryonic stem cells but also the production of cell cultures--even if it means sacrificing embryos. But on the same day, the White House released a note saying that the Administration will not attempt to change current law, which bans U.S. support for any research that destroys human embryos.
