The giant block portraits painted by the artist Chuck Close have fascinated modern art aficionados for several decades. But according to Pelli, the author of a Perspective in this issue, there is apparently there is something of the scientist in Chuck Close. Pelli presents a series of experiments using Close's portraits that disprove the widely held assumption that shapes are perceived independent of their size.
