This year's Nobel Prize in physiology or medicine was awarded to German-born cell biologist Günter Blobel for his insights into how the cell uses a ZIP code system of sorts to deliver thousands of proteins to various addresses within the cell. Together, say many colleagues, his studies laid the foundations for modern cell biology.
