Summary

Regulation of food safety at the international level poses challenges over and above those occurring within domestic borders. The recent use of a quantitative risk assessment (QRA) by the Codex Alimentarius, an organ of the World Health Organization, in the consideration of the risk posed by aflatoxin contamination of foods represents the first time that such an approach has been used at an international level. The political and health implications of the study relative to the implications of increased use of hepatitis vaccines are discussed.
