Summary

Although there is lots of information about chemoattractant receptors and their ligands, which direct the locomotion of phagocytic cells of the immune system, there are still missing pieces to the signaling pathways that turn receptor activation into directed migration. In a Perspective, Dekker and Segal discuss new findings (Li, Sasaki, Hirsch) that slot the gamma isoform of PI 3-kinase into the signaling picture. They show that the p110g catalytic subunit of PI 3-kinase g is involved both in the migration of neutrophils and macrophages and the activation of T cells.
