Naturwissenschaft und Technik in der DDR. Dieter Hoffmann and Kristie Macrakis, Eds. Akademie Verlag, Berlin, 1997. 294 pp. DM 78. ISBN 3-05-002955-2.

These two volumes are English and German versions, with some differences in content, of a study of the roles of science and technology in the former German Democratic Republic. Using interviews and many of the archives that have been opened since the fall of the Berlin Wall, the researchers--six Americans, four former East Germans, and three former West Germans--examine general policy issues, institutions, disciplines, and biographies in their social and political context.
