Summary

Very low temperatures at high pressures have long been believed to constitute a "forbidden zone" not realized in Earth. However, recent studies of ultrahigh pressure (UHP) terranes indicate that these rocks have experienced such forbidden zone conditions. Liou et al. discuss the implications of these observations for plate tectonics.
