Summary

Satellite measurements show almost no temperature change since measurements began in 1979; in contrast, temperatures at Earth's surface are reported to have risen by 0.3º to 0.4ºC over the same period. In this Perspective, Parker discusses how papers by Santer et al. (page 1227) and Gaffen et al. (page 1242) shed some light on the reasons for this discrepancy, understanding of which is crucial for modeling climate, explaining and attributing climatic changes, and planning for future climate monitoring.
