The Director General of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), Kafatos, discusses its blueprint for the next 5 years. Adapting to rapid changes in biology itself, the plans focus on functional genomics and interdisciplinary initiatives. Outreach activities will be expanded. The budget is in the early stages of preparation, but an additional increase will be needed to make up for loss of European Union support for EMBL's bioinformatics outstation, a setback in European science policy.
