Summary

Last week, after an 8-year review, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office gave the University of Rochester in New York a sweeping patent on the science underlying a new class of anti-inflammatory drugs known as COX-2 inhibitors. The market for such drugs is estimated at $10 billion by 2008. Within hours of the 11 April award, Rochester officials filed suit against the makers of a top-selling drug based on the discovery.
