Summary

More than 4000 patients have been enrolled in gene transfer experiments over the last decade, but until now the research has produced few unambiguous results, mainly due to the difficulty of finding ways of transferring genes into patients. The various viruses that researchers have developed for use as gene therapy "vectors" each have their own risks and advantages.
