Two decades ago, research on the weed Arabidopsis was obscure, to say the least. Now scientists in 20 countries, part of a close-knit international consortium known as the Arabidopsis Genome Initiative, are working around the clock to complete the sequencing of this "model" plant by year's end. Already, the project has raised the bar in sequencing excellence, and the new data are unlocking secrets of plant biology and evolution.
