A classic Washington rumor circulated last week that the incoming Bush Administration was trying to oust National Science Foundation director Rita Colwell. But the supposed evidence was thin or contradictory. With the scientific community already nervous about the new president's commitment to basic research, however, the rumor spread like wildfire in the days before the inauguration.
