SAN FRANCISCO-- Although the halls were abuzz with talk of the human genome, the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting (held here from 16 to 20 February) covered other topics as well, including evidence for an icy ecosystem in Antarctica. A new analysis of the geologic setting of Lake Vostok, a vast crescent of fresh water beneath 4 kilometers of antarctic ice, suggests that its waters may churn vigorously enough to feed a suspected ecosystem of microbes.
