SAN FRANCISCO-- At the American Association for the Advancement of Science's annual meeting (held here from 16 to 20 February), researchers showed how a brain pathway that holds promise for obese people may also be key to battling the devastating weight loss seen in some patients suffering from cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and AIDS. By blocking the so-called MC4 receptor--which when stimulated decreases appetite and increases energy use--in mice, researchers were able to prevent the wasting induced by two different types of cancers.
