GOMEL, BELARUS-- For several years, pathologist Yuri Bandazhevsky has argued that the cesium-137 accumulating in the Belarus population poses a serious health threat, particularly to children. But when he began to question the government's failure to take steps to reduce exposure to cesium by decontaminating inhabited areas, he was arrested, accused of taking bribes from students seeking admission to his institute, imprisoned, and stripped of his post.
