Summary

Dark, dense interstellar clouds are known to be the birthplaces of stars. In his Perspective, Hiraoka explains how results from laboratory studies, observations of comets, and spectroscopic observations of dark clouds are beginning to shed light on the chemical processes that take place in these clouds.
