Summary

Light-emitting devices at ultraviolet and visible wavelengths have many applications from displays to optical data storage. Lucrative markets are predicted for the blue GaN laser, and as John explains in his Perspective, ultraviolet diamond lasers may have a similarly promising future. Recent developments, such as the report by Koizumi et al., are set to overcome limitations that have held back diamond electronics hitherto.
