Summary

According to plate tectonics, plates are rigid and deform only at narrow boundaries but studies have shown that intraplate deformation can occur in continental plates. In her Perspective, Deplus discusses recent evidence for active deformation in the Indian Ocean, offering a rare opportunity to study intraplate deformation of oceanic lithosphere.
