Magnetic fields may have arisen in the early universe and could have played an important role in many astrophysical phenomena ever since. In his Perspective, Brandenburg discusses the evolution of these fields. Upcoming space missions will provide important insights, particularly with regard to the question of whether a primordial magnetic field existed in the early universe.
