The 4 April announcements of the closing of two science facilities caused a public eruption of discontent that had been festering behind the Smithsonian's famous exhibits for more than a year. The planned closures were the first casualties in a battle over the future of science at the venerable institution. Over the next few weeks, a flurry of newspaper stories told of trouble in the nation's attic. In the end, the public fuss gained one of the facilities a reprieve. But the tussle over Smithsonian science is far from over.
