Summary

Earlier this month, House and Senate spending panels approved overall increases for the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 2002 of 9.4% and 5.5%, respectively--more than the 1.5% the Bush Administration requested but less than the 15% sought by research advocates. Those middle-of-the-road numbers hide some controversial decisions on individual projects that were not included in NSF's budget request to Congress, however.
