PETERSHAM, MASSACHUSETTS-- The Harvard Forest is a pioneering site in the emerging discipline of historical ecology. Research here started in 1907, and the site is now part of the National Science Foundation's Long Term Ecological Research Network (see main text). The region's rich ecological history has many subplots that fascinate researchers.
