Summary

The protosolar nebula is believed to have had a homogeneous isotopic composition. Yet the isotopic composition of water on Earth differs widely from that of the primitive Sun. In his Perspective, Robert charts recent progress towards solving this mystery. It seems likely that the water came from a meteoritic source, whose water was derived in turn from the interstellar medium.
