Although many strandings end up as unsolved cases, scientists have no shortage of suspected causes, including disease, malnutrition, poisoning, injuries, storms, or parasites. It's been harder, however, to pinpoint the causes of relatively rare mass strandings, which can involve dozens of seemingly healthy animals.
