Ex-addicts struggle to resist cravings and are susceptible to relapse even years after their last dose. Researchers are seeking clues to what underlies these long-term changes. Some of the neural changes they've found look very familiar: Addiction seems to rely on some of the same neurobiological mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.
