Accurate clocks play a fundamental role in science and technology. They play a key role in the Global Positioning System, serve as international timekeeping standards, and enable fundamental laws of physics to be tested. Atomic clocks are today's most accurate clocks. In his Perspective, Gill reports from a recent symposium, where first steps toward tomorrow's even more accurate optical clocks were reported.
