Planktonic foraminifera have been used to deduce past temperature, chemistry, and circulation of the ocean. In their Perspective, Archer and Martin describe another potential use of these versatile proxies of past ocean conditions. Broecker and Clark use the thickness of their walls to deduce carbonate concentrations in the ocean during the last glacial period. These can in turn provide insights into the ocean's carbon cycle.
