Summary

Mutations in the tumor suppressor protein PTEN are found in many different tumors. As Penninger and Woodgett discuss in their Perspective, new findings implicate PTEN in the control of neuronal cell size and in the proliferation and self-renewal of neuronal stem cells ( Groszer et al.). This surprising finding may yield both research and therapeutic benefits.
