Summary

A mechanism that thwarts deadly tumors might come with a major drawback. Overactive p53--a protein that foils potentially cancerous cells--causes symptoms of old age and hastens death in mice, molecular biologists report in the 3 January issue of Nature. The work suggests a trade-off between cancer prevention and sustained vigor.
