Nerve growth factor binds to TrkA receptors on axon terminals, generating a survival signal that is propagated along the axon to the cell body of the neuron. In their Perspective, Miller and Kaplan discuss exciting new findings (MacInnis and Campenot) demonstrating that nerve growth factor does not have to be internalized with its receptor for the survival signal to be retrogradely transported along the axon to the neuronal cell body.
