Summary

The U.S. Department of Agriculture needs to strengthen its procedures for approving field tests and commercialization of transgenic plants, a National Research Council committee concluded in a report released last week. Although transgenic crops don't pose a greater risk than that of products of conventional breeding, the committee said, traits introduced by either technique can pose risks to the environment.
