Summary

Hydrides are unusual materials in which hydrogen is negatively charged. Compounds that contain both hydride and oxide ions are particularly rare. In his Perspective, Poeppelmeier highlights Hayward et al.'s synthesis of a perovskite containing both hydride and oxide ions. The material may have unusual magnetic and electronic properties.
