Summary

The pathogenic bacterium Bordetella can switch phenotype to evade attack by viruses called bacteriophages. In his Perspective, Hatfull discusses new work ( Liu et al .) that describes how a bacteriophage uses a reverse transcriptase-dependent process to generate variants that can infect both phenotypes of Bordetella.
