Summary

Prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells have quality assurance mechanisms that operate during translation to prevent buildup of deleterious protein products. In her Perspective, Maquat discusses new work ( Frischmeyer et al. and van Hoof et al.) that describes how eukaryotic cells identify and degrade messenger RNA that lacks a termination codon.
