During the next months, the U.S. Congress will decide the fate of the proposed nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain. Despite nearly two decades of study and site characterization, many important issues remain unresolved. The political pressure to resolve the issue of the disposal of high-level nuclear waste now drives the decision-making process at the expense of the science required to support this important public policy decision.
