The study of disease one cell at a time is being facilitated by advances in the field of tissue dissection. Using laser-guided microdissection tools coupled with a microscope, researchers can begin to understand molecular alterations in pure populations of cells. This essay discusses microdissection for an historical perspective and describes new approaches to the problem.
