Nanometer-scale beams of coherent x-rays could provide valuable information about the structure and dynamics of nanoscale objects. But x-rays have proven difficult to control, hampering efforts to create such beams. In his Perspective, Metzger highlights the report by Pfeiffer et al. , who have created a proof-of-principle two-dimensional waveguide for hard x-rays. The work is a first step toward coherent x-ray nanobeams.
