Accreting black holes can be powerful emitters of radiation. In their Perspective, Fabian and Miller show that iron lines in the emission spectrum of black holes can provide unprecedented insights into the innermost regions surrounding the black hole. The data provide support for spinning black holes and will help to test models of accretion and emission from black holes.
