Summary

What are the molecular mechanisms that determine the acquisition of male and female sexual characteristics? In a Perspective, Ken Burtis reviews a series of recent papers published elsewhere that elucidate the part played by the transcription factor, doublesex, in determining sexual dimorphism in the fruit fly.
