Janet Shoemaker, head of public affairs for the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) since 1989, has become an expert on bioterrorism policy's impact on research. And in a post-11 September world, she has also become ASM's unofficial liaison to a government increasingly worried about potential bioweapons.
