Summary

Can monkeys count? Debates about the numerical abilities of animals have raged among neuroscientists for decades. In a Perspective, Dehaene discusses exciting new work (Nieder et al.) showing that neurons in the lateral prefrontal cortex of the macaque brain encode numbers up to the number five.
