Summary

According to quantum mechanics, a charged particle can feel a magnetic flux even when it remains outside the magnetic field. This effect has been demonstrated experimentally in macroscopic systems. In his Perspective, Anandan highlights a recent mesoscopic experiment, which shows that this effect is modified by the spin of the charged particle. This single spin effect is coherent in such mesoscopic systems, as opposed to the coherent paired spin effect in superconductors.
